Did the Colts create a monster in the Jets?
by Jon McDonald
A large green monster, made up of the parts of many others, lay prone and lifeless, awaiting a spark to awaken it.
The odds of survival were long, and even if it was re-animated, there was no telling how long its life would last.
Then the jolt finally came.
Once animated, the monster wreaked havoc on all in its path, and ultimately set out to destroy its creator.
Is this the plot of the classic 1931 movie Frankenstein, or the story of the past four weeks of the New York Jets’ season?
With all apologies to Boris Karloff, I’m going with the Jets.
Four weeks ago, the Jets were in the thick of an AFC playoff race that involved as many as eight contenders. The green team was 7-7, and was charged with the task of beating the AFC’s No. 1-seeded team, the Colts (who also happened to be undefeated.)
As a juggernaut with nothing to play for the previous week, Indianapolis left in all its starters in a game against the Jaguars, and came out with a thrilling victory. This showed everyone that the Colts were clicking on all cylinders and were going to try for an undefeated season.
That reality was short lived.
Enter the wayward 7-7 New York Jets, who had lost 10-7 to the Falcons the previous week, and whose own coach declared them out of the playoffs.
The Colts started out with Peyton Manning at the helm, but when coach Jim Caldwell decided to replace Manning with the un-Manning-like Curtis Painter, the fate of the game was decided.
With that simple decision to play for the postseason and not get anyone hurt, the Colts awakened a big green monster.
After winning in Indianapolis, the Jets obliterated the Bengals (who also rested starters after the first half) to get into the playoffs. Then, the Jets manhandled the Bengals again, this time in Cincinnati in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.
After that, the Jets dispatched of a Chargers team that had won 11 straight games.
When the Jets were 7-7, the Colts could have kept them out of the playoffs.
When the Jets were 8-7, the Bengals could have kept them out of the playoffs.
New York already did away with one team that helped them in; do they have enough firepower to dethrone the other?
Right now the Jets are a giant green monster just waiting to destroy anything in its path.
And it looks like the Colts are next up on the list.

This is what Frankenstien does to the Colts. Technically it's Herman Munster stripping Baltimore Colts quarterback Johhny Unitas in 1965, but you get the picture. (The Associated Press)

It is a big stretch to say that the Jets are a threat to the Colts, but stranger things have happened.
