This isn’t the way it was supposed to end for Florida State coach Bobby Bowden.

After more than a decade at the top, the Seminoles have hit rock bottom and the program that Bowden created is moving on without him.

In retrospect, it probably would have been better if he would have retired after the 2005 season when his team last won an ACC Championship (the 12th for Bowden at FSU).

The problem with that is the Seminoles lost a close one to Penn State in the Orange Bowl following that season, further escalating the competition to become the all-time winningest coach between Bowden and Nittany Lions coach Joe Paterno.

Neither coach will admit this, but it seems likely that Bowden is more open to the idea of retiring with the NCAA potentially taking away 14 of his wins due to an academic scandal, putting JoePa’s win record far out reach.

Four seasons of mostly disappointment have followed Florida State’s last ACC title. His teams have lost six straight against state rival Florida and the last three haven’t even been close.

This recent run of mediocre seasons have put Seminoles fans in a tough place. They still love Bowden and what he’s done for their program, but the game of college football is all about “what have you done for me lately.” The answer, unfortunately for Bowden, is not much.
