Remote Jungle: Week 12

by Adam West

Last week’s games went pretty much according to plan with one notable exception: USC getting blown out at home by Stanford. To a lesser extent, Miami’s loss to North Carolina was surprising, but the Trojans were absolutely annihilated by the Cardinal. At least USC is bowl eligible. With the season winding down, a few teams are trying to stay undefeated, while far more are vying for a bowl slot. This week, good games are hard to come by, but just remember that in February you might be wishing for a Saturday like this. So let’s see what’s on in this week’s Remote Jungle.

NOON

GAME TO WATCH: No. 9 Ohio State at Michigan on ABC. Honestly, a basketball game between these teams might be more competitive right now. Ohio State is headed to the Rose Bowl, while Michigan is headed for Rose’s Bowling Alley if it loses. This is the final regular season for both teams, and the Wolverines need a win to even become bowl eligible. If Michigan loses this game, expect Rich Rodriguez to use the post-game interview to tell you about his beautiful eight-bedroom, nine bathroom house that he’s about to put on the market.

GAME TO SWITCH TO DURING COMMERCIALS: Minnesota at No. 15 Iowa on ESPN. This is the final week of the season for every Big Ten team except Illinois and Wisconsin, so we’ll show them some love in this slot. This might actually be an exciting game, as all of Iowa’s have been this season.

THE OTHERS ARE BLOWOUTS, I WANT TO WATCH A CLOSE ONE: Harvard at Yale on Versus. Seriously, this is probably going to be the most competitive game of the day. These teams really don’t like each other, and if you’ve never see The Game live on television, here’s your chance to cross it off of the bucket list.

OTHER GAMES: UT-Chattanooga at No. 2 Alabama on Fox.
North Carolina at Boston College on ESPN2.
Oklahoma at Texas Tech on FSN (12:30.)

3:30 P.M.

GAME TO WATCH: No. 10 LSU at Ole Miss on CBS. The Tigers are coming off a disappointing win over Louisiana Tech, while the Rebels are reveling in a hugs win over Tennessee. If momentum has anything to do with anything, Ole Miss will win. But we’ve see what happens when Ole Miss gets a big win, so it might be safe to bet the house on LSU.

GAME TO SWITCH TO DURING COMMERCIALS: Virginia at No. 18 Clemson on ABC. Clemson running back C.J. Spiller could be the most electric player in the nation right now, and he has the Tigers on the verge of an ACC title game berth. A win would pit Clemson against Georgia Tech in Tampa on Dec. 5. Tickets are still available and abundant.

THE OTHERS ARE BLOWOUTS, I WANT TO WATCH A CLOSE ONE: No. 13 Penn State at Michigan State on ABC. Another leg of the Big Ten farewell tour. Expect this game to last about three hours and around 30 total points to be scored. Not really going out on a limb there.

OTHER GAMES: UConn at Notre Dame on NBC (3:30.)
San Diego State at No. 23 Utah on Versus (4:00.)
Arizona State at UCLA on FSN (4:00.)

7:00-8:00 P.M.

GAME TO WATCH: Kansas at No. 3 Texas on ABC. If nothing else, it will be interesting to see if Kansas coach Mark Mangino gets fired during the game. Pelayers and administrators don’t seem to be very happy that Mangino yelled at some of his players and poked one in the chest with his finger. That’s like one ride on a New York subway.

GAME TO SWITCH TO DURING COMMERCIALS: Kansas State at Nebraska on ESPN. This game settles the Big 12 North, with the winner facing Texas in the title game if the Longhorns beat Kansas. Plenty of motivation for both teams, but this could just be another over hyped Big 12 game in a long line of over hyped Big 12 games this season. See: Oklahoma-Texas, Texas-Oklahoma State, Texas-Texas Tech, etc.

THE OTHERS ARE BLOWOUTS, I WANT TO WATCH A CLOSE ONE: Cal at No. 14 Stanford on Versus. Stanford has a chance to win the Pac-10 title for the first time in a long time. Cal could salvage its season with a win. It has been the best season in the Pac-10 in years, but you know what would make this season even better? If it was the Pac-12 and it had a championship game.
