Remote Jungle: Week 11

by Jon McDonald

Another week, another huge upset in college football. So many Top-10 teams have been beaten by unranked teams this season that last week’s loss by Iowa doesn’t seem as surprising. Things seem to be shaken up nearly every week, but the top three (Florida, Texas, Alabama) remain unbeaten. All three are heavy favorites on the road this week. Is this the week one of the three pillars of the polls falls during the regular season? Let us find out in this week’s Remote Jungle.

NOON

GAME TO WATCH: Tennessee at Ole Miss on CBS. Make no mistake, this is a huge game for both teams. Either one could win out and end up in the top 15, which would be a huge recruiting boost. Tennessee has the added distraction of three players being arrested during the week, so we’ll see how they handle that adversity during their current two-game winning streak. A win would make the Vols bowl eligible and give them a chance to have eight wins this season (Kentucky and Vandy are left on the schedule.) An Ole Miss win, coupled with a win next week against No. 8 LSU, would most likely get the Rebels into the top 20.

GAME TO SWITCH TO DURING COMMERCIALS: No 24 Clemson at N.C. State on ABC. This game should be a showcase for Clemson running back C.J. Spiller. Although Clemson sputtered to begin the season, Spiller has helped to right the ship with his big-play ability. Look for him to be featured in a game against the woeful Wolfpack, who have lost four out of five, but do have a one-game winning streak under their belts.

THE OTHERS ARE BLOWOUTS, I WANT TO WATCH A CLOSE ONE: No. 2 Texas at Baylor on FSN. Don’t get me wrong, this one probably won’t be close (in the second half at least), but Texas has struggled early against lesser opponents and Baylor really fits the bill. If one of these lesser teams keeps the Longhorns on the ropes long enough, who knows what could happen, but this game is the best of the rest of the bunch.

OTHERS: No. 7 Ga. Tech at Duke on ESPN2
Kentucky at Vanderbilt on Fox
Missouri at Kansas State on Versus
Michigan State at Purdue on ESPN

3:3o P.M.

GAME TO WATCH: No. 1 Florida at South Carolina on CBS. The Gators split the last two games in Columbia, S.C.,  and this is the rubber match. It has been hard to figure the Gators this season, especially on the road. Gamecocks quarterback Stephen Garcia is second only to Ryan Mallett in passing yards per game, and we all saw what Mallett did to the Gators in The Swamp. This game is not in The Swamp.

GAME TO SWITCH TO DURING COMMERCIALS: No. 15 Iowa at No. 10 Ohio State on ESPN. While the national title implications have vanished from this game, the matter of a Big Ten title is still at stake. The winner of this game has the inside track if it wins out. The only thing that is for certain about this contest is that it will have no bearing on who makes it to the Big Ten Championship Game, because that game does not exist.

THE OTHERS ARE BLOWOUTS, I WANT TO WATCH A CLOSE ONE: No. 25 Stanford at No. 11 USC on FSN. Jim Harbaugh has done a great job getting Stanford ranked. The Cardinal knocked off one of the hottest teams in the nation last week (Oregon) and comes into this game with boatloads of confidence. The Trojans are still reeling from a mauling at the hands of the Ducks. Despite the disparity in rankings, this could be anybody’s game.

7-8:00 P.M.

GAME TO WATCH: No. 3 Alabama at Mississippi State on ESPN. Florida played in Starkville a few weeks ago and its flaws were exposed. Alabama comes in after a huge win over LSU. I don’t believe in the transitive property in sports (i.e. Team A beat Team B who beat Team C; Therefore Team A>Team C). I do believe in Starkville, though, and so do the Bulldogs.

GAME TO SWITCH TO DURING COMMERCIALS: Notre Dame at No. 8 Pittsburgh on ABC. Weis vs. The Wann-stache. Never underestimate the power of either of these coaches to lose a game. Both had some degree of success in the NFL, now they’re trying to hold on to jobs at their respecive universities. Should be quite a battle, or not.

THE OTHERS ARE BLOWOUTS, I WANT TO WATCH A CLOSE ONE: Auburn at Georgia on ESPN. Throw out the records. Throw out the fact that neither team is in the race to win its division. This game will provide some drama because these teams hate each other so much. Actually, in Georgia, it’s a 50-50 split this week between hating Auburn and hating defensive coordinator Willie Martinez.

OTHERS: Arizona at Cal on Versus

LATE NIGHT SNACK

Arizona State at Oregon on ESPN, 10:15 P.M. The return of LeGarrette Blount is a good distraction from that other distraction which was losing to Stanford last week.
