Remote Jungle: Week 9
by Jon McDonald
It is going to be tough to top Week 8 of college football. Three Top-10 teams provided most of the drama, and their games turned out in three very different ways. No. 1 Alabama need to block a last-second field goal to beat unranked Tennessee. No. 7 Iowa had to score a touchdown on the last play of the game to beat Michigan State, and No. 8 Miami lost to Clemson on a touchdown in overtime. It made for some incredible theatre as a college football fan. I’m sure fans of those teams found it less spectacular than I did. Week 9 could shape up to be just as good. I guess we’ll just have to go to the Remote Jungle and see.
NOON
GAME TO WATCH: No. 24 Ole Miss at Auburn on Fox. Auburn has lost three in a row and Ole Miss has climbed back into the rankings after a convincing win over Arkansas. The way the SEC has gone this year, that probably translates into Auburn beating Ole Miss 56-14.
GAME TO SWITCH TO DURING COMMERCIALS: Indiana at No. 7 Iowa on ESPN. Iowa has quite a flair for the dramatic, but don’t expect much drama in this one. Or do. I really can’t get a handle on the Hawkeyes after they beat No. 5 (at the time) Penn State then struggle to beat Arkansas State.
THE OTHERS ARE BLOWOUTS, I WANT TO WATCH A CLOSE ONE: N.C. State at Florida State on ABC. This is like watching Mike Tyson fight Evander Holyfield. In 2009. Interesting, but you feel kind of guilty.
3:30 P.M.
GAME TO WATCH: No. 1 Florida vs. Georgia (In Jacksonville) on CBS. This game is always interesting, because while you know exactly what is going to happen, you never know exactly what might happen. One team is usually up and the other is down, but the history is littered with upsets and heartache. For the past 20 years, though, the heartache has rented a condo in Athens, Ga.
GAME TO SWITCH TO DURING COMMERCIALS: No. 18 Miami at Wake Forest on ABC. Miami started the season with three wins out of four games against ranked teams. Now, after a loss to unranked Clemson, maybe they can admit: Watching Spongebob Squarepants is not an effective strategy in college football.
THE OTHERS ARE BLOWOUTS, I WANT TO WATCH A CLOSE ONE: No. 12 Penn State at Northwestern on ESPN. Even though Penn State is ranked pretty high, this game just barely beat out the “Can I Keep My Job Please? Bowl” between Michigan and Iowa.
7:00-8:15
GAME TO WATCH: No. 4 USC at No. 10 Oregon on ESPN2. This is the game of the day. If USC loses, it’s officially out of the title race. If Oregon loses, LeGarrette Blount might punch somebody again.
GAME TO SWITCH TO DURING COMMERCIALS: No. 3 Texas at No. 13 Oklahoma State on ABC. Is it just me, or have all the “marquee” Big 12 matchups this year just not lived up to their billing? Watching the HUGE Oklahoma-Texas game was like observing an artist who is painting a picture of someone kicking a field goal. Boring, boring, boring, then after he finishes, it’s still boring.
THE OTHERS ARE BLOWOUTS, I WANT TO WATCH A CLOSE ONE: No. 21 South Carolina at Tennessee on ESPN. SEC Commissioner Mike Slive told all coaches that complaining about officiating would result in a fine or a suspension. I will be rooting very hard for the officiating in this game to be terrible. Like ALCS umpiring terrible, 0r 2003 Florida-Florida State terrible. I just want to see exactly how much self control Lane Kiffin actually has.
