Revisiting a poll question after another Parsons buzzer-beater

by Jon McDonald

When Chandler Parsons hit his first buzzer-beater of the month (against N.C. State on Jan. 3), Gatorsports.com asked the question “Will the UF men’s basketball team win another game on a buzzer-beater this season?” The Gators don’t hit shots to win the game as time expires very often, so it was no surprise that 62% of the 1,196 responses were “No.” The 38% of you that said “Yes” should pat yourself on the back on your way to the nearest slot machine … Read More »

Did the Colts create a monster in the Jets?

by Jon McDonald

A large green monster, made up of the parts of many others, lay prone and lifeless, awaiting a spark to awaken it. The odds of survival were long, and even if it was re-animated, there was no telling how long its life would last. Then the jolt finally came. Once animated, the monster wreaked havoc on all in its path, and ultimately set out to destroy its creator. Is this the plot of the classic 1931 movie Frankenstein, or the story of the past … Read More »

Weekend Top 5: Pants on the ground edition

by Jon McDonald

These are the five big winners over the weekend: 5. Derek Dooley – Tennessee’s new head coach managed to get a premier job after going 17-20 at his previous job (Louisiana Tech.) Sounds eerily like Tennessee’s previous head coach. At least Vols athletic director Mike Hamilton is consistent. 4. Pittsburgh basketball – The Panthers moved up seven spots in the AP poll this week after big wins over Big East foes No. 15 Connecticut and Louisville. Pittsburgh joins  No. 4 Villanova in the Big … Read More »

Fiesta Bowl: Classic game or epic snoozefest?

by Jon McDonald

Watching the Fiesta Bowl last night, it was hard to ascertain whether the game was a great BCS buster game, or a boring, mistake-filled flop. So I came up with two lists, the first argues that it was a great game, and the second argues that it was as forgettable as that guy in high school who never talked to anyone. WHY THE FIESTA BOWL WAS GREAT 1. It came down to the wire – Sure, there weren’t many points scored in … Read More »

Weekend Top 5: Insane 75-foot shot edition

by Jon McDonald

5. Minnesota Vikings – Brett Favre and company head into the playoffs with the No. 2 seed and a first round bye after humiliating the New York Giants 44-7, who were apparently didn’t get the memo that the team had another game left. The Vikings benefitted from an Eagles loss to slide into the second position in the NFC. 4. Dexter McCluster – The Ole Miss running back ended his senior season by earning a Cotton Bowl MVP award in his … Read More »

Caption Planet: Bowden out

by Adam West

This isn’t the way it was supposed to end for Florida State coach Bobby Bowden. After more than a decade at the top, the Seminoles have hit rock bottom and the program that Bowden created is moving on without him. In retrospect, it probably would have been better if he would have retired after the 2005 season when his team last won an ACC Championship (the 12th for Bowden at FSU). The problem with that is the Seminoles lost a close one to … Read More »

Remote Jungle: Week 13

by Jon McDonald

A friend of The Jungle, we’ll just call him Brent Hartman, asked over Thanksgiving break why this blog wasn’t posted earlier this week to preview the games on Thursday and Friday. Well, we didn’t forsee Texas and Texas A&M having a record-breaking shootout, or Auburn nearly toppling Alabama, or West Virginia upsetting Pitt. So, the Jungle was wrong, but we are going to fix that mistake right now by previewing Saturday’s games before they get a chance to be played. NOON GAME … Read More »

Caption Planet: Dawg days

by Jon McDonald

Mark Richt and the 6-5 Georgia Bulldogs are in serious danger of finishing the season at .500. The Dawgs lost to Kentucky this past weekend, but really they beat themselves by turning the ball over four times in the second half. Now Georgia has to defeat No. 7 Georgia Tech in Atlanta to help Richt avoid his first non-winning season with the program. Now you can chalk part of Richt’s worst season at UGA up to a tough schedule, but that’s not the only problem in Athens. Turnovers … Read More »

Remote Jungle: Week 12

by Adam West

Last week’s games went pretty much according to plan with one notable exception: USC getting blown out at home by Stanford. To a lesser extent, Miami’s loss to North Carolina was surprising, but the Trojans were absolutely annihilated by the Cardinal. At least USC is bowl eligible. With the season winding down, a few teams are trying to stay undefeated, while far more are vying for a bowl slot. This week, good games are hard to come by, but just … Read More »

Caption Planet: Weis decision?

by Adam West

Sorry Charlie. It’s just not working out. Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis is on a seat so hot right now, it could fry bacon. After a respectable start to his Irish tenure in 2005, the powers-that-be in South Bend couldn’t wait to throw some money at the former New England Patriots offensive coordinator. With a 5-2 record in his first season, Notre Dame handed Weis a 10-year extension worth an estimated $30-40 million. His first two seasons at Notre Dame went fairly … Read More »
